At the Rice Bowl we celebrate British Chinese food.
We see the Chinese takeaway in Britain as the original fusion food. What started as a small number of dishes imported by the first wave of Chinese immigrants, ingeniously remixed for the Western palette using whatever ingredients they could find locally — is now a whole cuisine accepted island (and nation)wide as part of the fabric of British culture.
Whether it was your first taste of sweet and sour chicken balls as a child, the nostalgia of weekly family visits to your local Chinese restaurant where grandad wore his best blazer, hazy memories of boozy business lunches, or post-pub takeaways to soak up the alcohol - everyone in Jersey has a sentimental connection to British Chinese food and for many, that’s thanks to the Rice Bowl as the oldest Chinese restaurant on the island with over 40 years of history.
Is it authentic? No, not really. Maybe sometimes. But it’s ours, it’s British (well, kind of) — and we think it should be celebrated.
No specific regions, no hard-to-pronounce ingredients and no pretence. Just classic British Chinese food enjoyed as it should be — fresh, hot, delicious and among friends and family.
Featuring a curated menu of much-loved Anglo-Chinese classics eaten by generations of Islanders as a weekly Saturday evening takeaway sat in front of the TV, alongside a new contemporary dine-in menu that seeks to recapture the glamourous dining experience which Chinese cuisine first offered when it arrived on the Jersey dining scene decades ago.
British staples like chilli salt chips and the essential curry sauce or American-style Chinese takeout General Tso’s chicken? Take your pick.
Funky, salty, spicy - Asian food was made for drinking with, and we’ll let you in on a secret… the Rice Bowl is basically a cocktail bar disguised as a Chinese restaurant.
With a multi award-winning mixologist behind the bar, enjoy our curated selection of in-house cocktails or name your poison and indulge in something classic. Spirits not your bag? Wash down your food with an ice-cold bottle of Tsingtao or Korean soju. And don’t worry, with our premium wine list, there’s a bottle of Bordeaux for dad too.
1 Family. 3 Generations.
Summers. Winters. Birthdays. Proposals. Weddings. Storms. High tides. Decking thiefs.
And now the opulence has been turned up a notch. From British colonial influences to the hustle and bustle of Chinese cities, and the fishing shanty towns of rural Hong Kong, we took inspiration from everywhere. The beautiful new interiors act as a memorable setting for endless evenings, shared over food. Feeling adventurous? Transport yourself to Chinatown in our private dining room, complete with karaoke setup.
As the most southerly Chinese restaurant in the British aisles, you can also enjoy beachside terrace dining, against the stunning backdrop of Jersey’s unbeatable south coast.
Here’s to another 40 years.
